Indie filmmaker Bharat Darira will share his tips, tricks and techniques for shooting films and videos on very low or zero budget, in an online workshop

Low budget, high value

Working the script around easily available locations is one of the top tips that Darira has to offer

One of the biggest challenges for aspiring film-makers has always been procuring the necessary budget. Filmmaking can be an expensive affair and the associated costs can be a deterrent to many. A Bengaluru-based indie filmmaker, however, is challenging the notion by offering a workshop where you can replicate a quality production for a fraction of the costs or even for nothing at all.

“My goal is to guide enthusiasts on how to make the best of the limited resources available to them,” says Bharat Darira. Acknowledging that starting out as a novice filmmaker with limited means can be a lonely and disheartening journey, he adds that he wants to share with participants lessons he has learned from his nearly five years of experimenting. “I will talk about several aspects of filmmaking, including finding locations, seeking permission from the police to shoot there, handling conflicts on set, and directing non-actors and eliciting strong performances from them,” he adds. Darira’s own short film, Best Friend, which is currently playing on streaming platforms and has been shown at an international film festival, was also made using these techniques. The idea, he summarises, is to impart a more practical approach to filmmaking, which makes the craft accessible to all.
