A weekend underground showdown brings up and coming rappers under one roof to celebrate Mumbai’s growing hip-hop culture
A previous underground rap battle in progress
Hip-hop has always been the music of the comparatively lesser privileged. From Tupac Shakur to Eminem and Jay-Z, the genre has created heroes out of working-class individuals. This weekend’s Straight From The Underground show will feature a line-up of 15 new-generation hip-hop freestylers, rappers and emcees take the stage at a suburban five-star to express their own Mumbai hip-hop experience.

The line-up includes Akash Ahuja, Zehen, Yung Nos, J Killa, Poetik Justis, Sahir and Yeda Anna, among others. Rapper Sahir says, “Such events are needed as they shine a light on talented artistes who require all the possible support.”
For hip-hop enthusiasts, the event will also see the launch of city-based freestyle rapper Onkar Pujari aka Yeda Anna’s much-awaited album, Yeda Kaun. Rohan Ravindran, co-founder of Whizz Media, one of the organisers of the event, says that this is an effort to highlight artistes who need support and awareness. With an event of this scale, the attention will not be hard to find.
