Skirts are having a fashion moment, once again but this time, they’re donning their bare, more brazen avatar. Sheer skirts are all the rage this season and while they may seem impractical in theory, with a little imaginative styling, they can up your style game by a few notches. “While Hollywood stars are wearing transparent skirts with high-waisted briefs and boy shorts, or with strategically-placed embroidery, these styles may be a little too risqué for daily life,” shares fashion designer Aanchal Bubber Mehta. She shares her tips:

. Layer for sophistication
A long and oversized cardigan top or blazer, cinched with a chic belt can offer much-needed coverage, as can wearing a mini skirt underlayer. However, if you want to maximize the coverage and the aesthetics, Mehta recommends investing in a thick nude-coloured skirt that lets the fabric of the skirt shine while also keeping you covered. For something in between, especially for evening gigs, body-shaping shorts can create a more streamlined silhouette without making you look too matronly. A tube shapewear under-dress is another favourite amongst social media influencers, while a satin slip skirt adds a classic touch.

. Make it yours
Sheer organza, tissue and mesh are obvious choices but if you’re looking for a little more coverage, mul cotton, chiffon and georgette are other great options, says Mehta. Pick a silhouette that flatters your body shape, she advises — skater skirts, mid-thigh styles and floor-length A-line skirts look great on curvier bodies, while more petite bodies can sport miniskirts and high-waist styles. The hottest colour to wear this trend in, this season, is white but you can just as easily opt for deeper tones for an evening look.
Mehta is partial to layering sheer skirts with a sequinned mini (look for pieces with flatter sequins for a smoother finish) or a lurex underskirt in pewter green, gold or copper to amp up the iridescent effort. When picking out a skirt, look for a design that features pin tucks or pleats, she recommends, as the doubled panels will add depth and an interplay of light and dark to make the skirt more interesting. Similarly, patchwork or applique designs can also add visual interest to your sheer skirts.
