Once considered appropriate as beachwear only, flip-flops are now acceptable as street or even occasion-wear. Here’s how to get it right

For most fashion lovers, flip-flops have long been a wardrobe item associated with convenience, not style. But that’s changing with trend-setters such as model Bella Hadid wearing them out and about, paired with carefully curated ensembles. “When it comes to comfort, nothing beats the simplicity and the laid-back vibe of flip-flops. However, it’s important to pick the right pair and also style the rest of your outfit carefully, so you don’t come across as underdressed,” says Aakruti Sejpal, co-founder of Aak:Ch, a personal shopping service.

Add some height: Like Hadid, Sejpal is a fan of dressier flip-flops that have a subtle kitten heel. These can be worn with a variety of looks, including simple pantsuits or wide-legged linen trousers. “Go easy on the accessories, and avoid very structured fabrics so you can lean into the more relaxed appeal of your footwear,” Sejpal says.

Go bold: Bold colours such as neon orange and green work well with flip-flops that have a platform heel. These can be worn with flared jeans and a simple T-shirt for the classic summer aesthetic. Or, pair them with a long, flowing dress and a tote.
Evening wear, too: Leather flip-flops with thin straps can easily shift your look from day to night. Style these with a monochrome outfit and vintage accessories. Stick to black or skin tones and avoid embellishments. Experiment with the shape of the footwear. Don’t forget your pedicure and add sparkling toe-rings.
