Taking a chic foot forward, three stylists decode how this year’s edition of the Golden Globes was a refreshing take on classic silhouettes

This is not the Grammy Awards or the Met Gala but this writer did not expect the red (read: crimson) carpet looks at the 81st Golden Globes to land up in our bookmark folders. While its unsaid theme has always been glamour, stylists didn’t play into boring narratives, giving us spins on formal structures and contemporary takes on classic silhouettes.

Bold and balanced

Gabriella Demetriades, founder-creative director of Deme by Gabriella points out, “[The looks this year] celebrated individual style over predictable trends. The departure from the usual conformity with colours and silhouettes was refreshing. It becomes mundane when everyone adheres strictly to the [style] deemed ‘in’ for the season.” Despite the familiar silhouette, Taylor Swift’s choice of a bold green Tom Ford gown reiterated Demetriades’ views on the importance of embracing unique hues and design. Ose Studious founders Nishika and Twisha Bhagat, echo Demetriades’ sentiment, “Overall, this year’s fashion struck the perfect balance between simplicity and elegance with intricate details.” The details we loved were Gillian Anderson’s rough borders and the embroidered vulvas on a Gabriela Hearst gown, a direct nod to her role in Sex Education. Likewise, Margot Robbie’s Giorgio Armani Privé sequined dress with tulle around her arms wasn’t just Barbiecore; it was a homage to a 1977 edition of the doll.

The sisters point out these touches across looks, noting Emma Stone’s simple silhouette with shading within the embroidery that showcased a muted motif and a colour scheme, while Greta Lee’s Loewe ivory dress with a simple front and exposed back blended avant-garde elements and ready-to-wear aesthetics. They add, “These combined modernity, elegance and fashion-forwardness.” One of the favourites for the stylists was Hunter Schafer’s Prada look. Nishika and Twisha elaborate, “It was a show-stealer with its ethereal organza overlay — functional and red-carpet-perfect. This aligns with the trend of silent luxury, cleverly embracing monochromatic styles, especially classic creams, and whites. While there were hints of reds and burgundies, the milky whites stood out for us.” The men’s looks also wowed with the chic tailored suits worn by Chris Perfetti, Tyler James Williams and Jeremy Allen White. Stylist and costume designer Aasia Abbas decodes Billie Eilish’s very Gen-Z look with her Willy Chavarria outfit. Abbas says, “Her signature oversized coat, boxy shirt and beige skirt gave us a frump-core aesthetic. I love her Mary Jane shoes which she thrifted and wore with socks.”
