Generation Z fashion is typically all about reviving elements of the old charm. Everything from puff sleeves and flannel shirts to bell bottoms and cheetah prints are back in the market with new glamour.

While many of these fashion trends have been received enthusiastically by the fashion police, one revival that has left a bittersweet taste is socks with sandals. While the trend whose roots can be traced back to the Romans, was looked down upon by millennials, the current generation enjoys donning this comfort-wear with almost everything.

High fashion, really?

Vouching for it, Isha Bhansali, a celebrity stylist believes that it is a pretty cool style that this generation has picked up from the 1950s and ‘60s. Adding that socks with sandals should be on the trending list every year, Bhansali says, “My favourite is socks with heels. I think it is about time that the humble sock gets approval from regular people because it is the coolest accessory you can have. You can play around and do so much with it. But people don’t really consider it high fashion, and that’s sad.”

Bhansali advises that socks with sandals would look great on shorts or short skirts and dresses, maintaining the focus on socks. Striped ones would look great if you are going for denims. Pointing out her favourite glitter socks, Bhansali sums up that even a basic colour with glitter will glam up pretty much everything that you wear.

Comfort versus aesthetics

Divyak D’Souza, a celebrity stylist and costume designer, believes this trend  is GenZ’s way of reviving  the idea of comfortable fashion. He points out that socks with sandals were rejected by the fashion world in the past because they were deemed too comfortable. “At one point, it was sacrilege for you to step out in a pair of track pants or joggers. But today it is cool and widely accepted,” he reminds, adding that socks and sandals met a similar fate a few years ago due to stuck up and dated ideas like ‘people have to suffer to look good’.

However, the stylist admits that although he feels better about people looking for comfort in fashion, he would not recommend adopting the trend entirely. “Maybe there is an emergence of it now because fashion critics and influencers on Instagram are bringing it back. It is interesting to see people making it a trend but I do not see anything to aesthetically aspire to. If it is comfortable for you, go for it. But is it something I would put on the cover of a fashion magazine anytime soon? I don’t think so,” sums up D’Souza.
