Cops suspect cash may have been brought to distribute during elections
Acting on the directive issued by the Election Commission of India to watch out for malpractices during the election season, Bibwewadi police, during a routine vehicle checking operation, seized cash of Rs 50 lakh from two persons who were travelling in a car on the Upper Indiranagar road.
The accused have been identified as Lakshman Shinde (35), a resident of Katraj and Navnath Sanas (27) from Swami Nagar in Dhankawadi.
When Bibwewadi police station constables gestured Shinde to stop the car, they ignored the instructions and headed towards Mahesh Society Chowk.
Stuck in heavy traffic at the chowk, the car got caught in the middle, which gave enough time for the police to track them down.
The cops searched the car and found cash worth Rs 50 lakh inside a bag. Bibwewadi police immediately informed the Income Tax department and Election Commission office and seized the money.
Police suspect that this cash may be from Hawala dealing or may have been brought for the purpose of distributing during elections. Police Inspector (Crime) Manoj Khandale is investigating the case.
