The accused, a Sinhagad Road resident, has been booked for rape and under several sections of the children’s protection act
Dattawadi police yesterday arrested a 45-year-old man on the charge of raping his 11-year-old daughter repeatedly in the past one year.
The mother of the victim approached a counsellor and, acting on her advice, decided to approach the police against her husband, supported by the girl’s aunt.
The suspect has been identified as Sachin Shrikant Marathe (45), resident of Anandnagar on Sinhagad Road. He has been remanded in police custody till June 27 by the court of judicial magistrate (first class).
The survivor’s aunt has registered the FIR against Marathe at Dattawadi police station. Marathe has been charged under section
376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and sections 3(b), 5(m) (n) and 7 (related to penetrative sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
Assistant Police Inspector (API) Jyoti Gadkari, who is the investigating officer in the case, said, “Marathe was earlier working with a private firm and is presently jobless. The girl’s mother works in a private company. Marathe was sexually abusing his daughter for over a year, but the girl could not muster the courage to speak up against her father.”
“When the girl had gone to her aunt’s house, she confided in her and narrated the horrific ordeal she had had to go through several times. The aunt then took the girl’s mother along with her to the Bhartiya Stree Shakti Jagran Manch, a women’s support organisation, in Sadashiv Peth. The counsellor there advised the mother to lodge an FIR against Marathe,” API Gadkari said.
Marathe has been remanded in police custody till June 27. Both he and his daughter will be subjected to medical tests to establish the alleged crime.
