Mahvish, the man's wife, alleged Monday that her family was behind the murder of her husband Abdul Hakim.

Mahvish claimed that ever since the couple married in court two years ago, their families had been baying for the couple's blood.

Hounded by their families, the young couple had shifted base to New Delhi, and had repeatedly raised their voice against "honour killings".

The couple had appeared on "Satyamev Jayate", the famous television show hosted by film star Aamir Khan.

Mahvish told police that the panchayat had ordered their killing two years back, after they tied the knot. She said she believed that the panchayat had connived with her family to kill her husband.

The couple had recently returned to the village after the senior superintendent of police (SSP) Bulandshahr had assured them police protection.

Circle Officer (CO) Bulandshahr Lal Saheb Yadav, however, denied the involvement of the families in the killing.

He said that the girl's family had accepted her demand that she be allowed to marry Hakim. Prima facie, the involvement of the girl's family can be ruled out, Yadav said.

Police said that during their stay in Delhi, Hakim's nephew Salman had a tiff with someone. There was even a fight between Hakim and his nephew Nov 21 over that issue. Police claim that Salman shot his uncle.

Senior police officials refused to comment on the matter, and said they would "get back" at an appropriate time.

Other officials said they were busy with the assembly session, and thus were not seized of the matter.
