Sadashiv Peth shootout: Slain contractor's son-in-law nabbed again in firing case

A year after civil contractor Tejbahadur Singh Thakur — owner of a redeveloped wada property at Limayewadi in Sadashiv Peth — was shot dead at his residence by unknown assailants last year, his son-in-law Jitendra Jainath Pal is now involved in a firing incident near the same building on Tilak Road with a former jail mate Abhishek Kasbe on Monday night.

The Vishrambaug police arrested Pal, who was out on bail, on Tuesday under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Kasbe, who has a criminal record, is still absconding.

Absconding: The police are on the lookout for 30-year-old Abhishek Kasbe, the accused with a criminal record

According to sources, Pal and Kasbe met each other in Yerawada jail last year. After that Pal had allegedly borrowed Rs 1 lakh from Kasbe. Kasbe was trying to recover his money from Pal and had come to meet him at Limayewadi to settle the deal. They entered into a brawl on Monday night after which Kasbe allegedly opened fire from his pistol.

Pal was arrested in November 2012 by the Khadak police on charges of murdering Thakur over a property dispute. Pal had allegedly hired a hitman to get rid of his father-in-law.

Anmol Sudesh Giri (20), a student and tenant staying in the redeveloped building —Dattatreya Apartment in Limayewadi — has filed a complaint against the duo regarding the firing incident.

According to the complaint, an unknown person fired a bullet towards the building on Monday night at around 9.30 pm and fled from the spot on a motorcycle.

Police Inspector Rajendra Sawant from Vishrambaug police station said, ''Our primary investigation has revealed that Pal and Kasbe were present at the spot where the firing took place. They were drinking liquor on Monday night after which Kasbe fired in the air. After investigating the case, we have arrested Pal and are on the lookout for Kasbe. We will nab him soon.''

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime I) Rajendra Bhamare said, ''The bullet found near the building is of 7.65mm bore which is commonly used by criminals. We are investigating the case from all possible angles and we have not yet arrived at any conclusion.''
