She tried to run away after taking custody of the girl child from her mother Rekhaben in the ward of the Gujarat government-run Sir Sayajirao General Hospital in the city, police said. After giving birth to a girl child only five days ago, Rekhaben had come to the ward for a family planning operation since this was her third delivery.
In the hospital ward, Sharadaben Thakor requested Rekhaben to hand over her daughter to her under the pretext of wanting to play with the five-day old baby girl. Trusting Sharadaben, the mother handed over her daughter to the woman and went to a nearby place for having meals.
Police said that when Rekhaben returned to the hospital ward, she raised an alarm as she found neither her daughter nor Sharadaben. However, a boy named Dipak Gallu who works at a nearby tea stall had noticed Sharadaben running away with the girl child, after which he caught her and handed her over to the police.
In her police complaint, Rekhaben stated that Sharadaben had requested her to hand over her daughter to her, police said, adding, the matter is being investigated.
