The Borivli police on December 18 arrested a woman who made copies of jewellery pieces so that they weighed less than the original and kept them for sale at the shop where she worked. She would take the original pieces from gold sets to other jewellers asking them to make the same pieces at a lower weight, adjust the making charges and pocket the difference. Within around four months she had made Rs 22 lakh through this.
The accused identified as Sangeeta Chavan, 35, worked for Manubhai Jewellers in Borivli and was in charge of displaying gold ornaments. The police said for the past three-four months she had been exchanging some pieces from the gold sets, for eg. rings or earrings, with the same pieces of lower weight and pocketing the difference.
