Newborn sale attempt busted at Mumbai's Govandi nursing home; two arrested

Police said the woman had recently given birth at a nursing home owned by Dr Kayamuddin Mukimoddin Khan, who has now been arrested along with staff nurse Anita Popat Sawant. The infant’s mother is currently admitted to the hospital and undergoing treatment. The doctor and nurse were produced in court and remanded to five days of police custody

The Shivaji Nagar Police in Govandi have arrested a doctor and a nurse for their alleged involvement in a racket to sell a newborn boy for Rs 5 lakh. The case came to light after police received information that a 21-year-old unmarried woman, who had delivered a premature baby at a local nursing home, was allegedly planning to sell the infant for money.

Police said the woman had recently given birth at a nursing home owned by Dr Kayamuddin Mukimoddin Khan, who has now been arrested along with staff nurse Anita Popat Sawant. The infant’s mother is currently admitted to the hospital and undergoing treatment. The doctor and nurse were produced in court and remanded to five days of police custody. Police said other individuals allegedly involved in brokering the deal have also been booked.
