The Kandivli police on Monday detained a 16-year-old for allegedly stealing 26 high-end bicycles from the western suburbs. The accused, a school student, was hooked to drugs and was in dire need of money to fund his habits. The cost of the bicycles collectively is nearly Rs 4 lakh, an officer said.

According to a report in Times of India, the alleged incident came to light on March 16 when a businesswoman lodged a complaint at Kandivli police station about the theft. In her complaint, the woman, who lives in a highrise on Kandivli Link Road, said that her bicycle was stolen between 4.30 pm and 6.20 pm from the society's parking lot.
Police officials started the probe and after scanning the CCTV footage, on April 12, they tracked down a youngster, a class 9 school student. During questioning, he confessed his crime. Cops managed to find 25 other stolen bicycles, besides the one belonging to the businesswoman.
Senior inspector Babasaheb Salunke said, "The youngster used to sell the stolen bicycles at throwaway prices." During the probe, cops found out that the accused targetted expensive bicycles that were parked in societies or parking lots in the Kandivali-Malad-Bangur Nagar belt.
An officer said that the rightful owners of all the bicycles were tracked down and the stolen bicycles were returned to them. The police are now examining the case to see if the accused had accomplices.
