The Samta Nagar Police have succeeded in tracing the mother of a newborn girl who was found on the first floor of a building in Kandivli east over a week ago, the police said.

During her interrogation, she confessed of leaving her newborn child on the stairs of the building, the police said.
According to the police, it has been revealed that the mother of the child is just 18 years old, she was allegedly sexually assaulted by her own relatives. Further investigations in the matter are on.
An official said, "She was lured from Uttar Pradesh to Mumbai for a job two years ago. While her stay in the city she got pregnant, her relatives tried to abort the child by giving her some pills but it did not work. They did take her to a hospital for abortion fearing she being a minor then."

The police said, investigations also revealed that the accused had brought his mother too along with the woman to the building while she was in labor pain. She later gave birth to the child on the staircase. Her relative (an accused in the matter) fled away before the delivery. The mother of the accused also left after her delivery, efforts are on to trace the accused.
Senior Police Inspector Narendra Shinde said, "The Samta Nagar police had been investigating the matter. We have scanned hundreds of CCTV cameras, call data records, tower locations and we managed to trace the baby's mother on Monday. Efforts of the team to trace the 26-year-old accused is being done. He has been booked under the stringent POCSO Act."
