A Mumbai sessions court on Wednesday convicted a 35-year-old school van driver for sexually assaulting a minor girl and sentenced him to five years of rigorous imprisonment.

The accused, identified as Manoj Visapurkar, was also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 by the court.

The incident took place on January 29, 2019, when the girl was travelling home from school in a school van. The accused asked the girl to sit next to him when a student vomited in the van. He then went on to sexually assault the minor, an Indian Express report stated.

The Powai police filed an FIR against Manoj and arrested him on February 1, 2019.

“The accused has been convicted under Section 354 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 10 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. If the accused does not pay the fine, he will have to suffer rigorous imprisonment for two more years,” public prosecutor Geeta Malankar said as quoted by the report.
