A 39-year-old Pune farmer has allegedly been cheated by a trader at the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/search/apmc-market-articles" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Agriculture Produce Market Committee</a> (APMC) in Navi Mumbai of Rs 5.7 lakh.
The accused, from Vashi, contacted the strawberry farmer and sought supply of the fruit on credit.
According to the police, as the woman was dealing with the trader for the first time, she asked one of her relatives to do due diligence and verify whether the accused was a merchant at the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/search/vashi-articles" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Vashi</a> APMC.
"After confirmation, she supplied him fruit stocks worth Rs 5.7 lakh between November 2022 and February this year," a police official from APMC police station said.
"However, the accused did not pay the money despite repeated reminders," added the police.
The woman then approached the police with a complaint.
On Saturday, the police registered a case against the trader under Indian Penal Code Section 420 (cheating).
Meanwhile, in another incident, Police have registered a case against five persons for allegedly cheating a 55-year-old man from Navi Mumbai of Rs 96 lakh by luring him to invest in shares for good returns.
The accused contacted the victim, resident of Nerul area, on different occasions between August 12 and 30 and asked him to invest in shares
"The victim made an investment of Rs 96,72,100, but when he asked for returns, the accused gave evasive replies," the police official from cyber police station said.
"Based on the victim's complaint, the police registered a case against the five accused on Saturday under Indian Penal Code sections 420 (cheating) and 34 (common intention) and provisions of the Information Technology Act," the police official said.
