A man who killed his partner on a busy road in Palghar's Vasai because he suspected she was dating someone else has admitted to attempting suicide twice, a police official said on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the Palghar man identified as Rohit Yadav (32) killed Aarti Yadav (22) in Vasai by striking her in the head 18 times with a wrench. Despite the large number of bystanders, he did not flee and remained by her body until police arrived, reported PTI.

According to the report, on June 8, Aarti reported Rohit to the Achole police in Palghar district for threatening her and breaking her phone. She did, however, urge some indulgence for him. The police charged Rohit with a non-cognisable offence and warned him not to bother her.

The Palghar man called Aarti on Monday night but claimed it was an accident and requested her not to report it to the police, an MBVV police official told PTI.

According to the report, in jail, Rohit claimed he attempted to end his life twice after accusing Aarti of cheating. They were neighbours and had been in a relationship for some years. She had just ceased talking to the Palghar man, prompting him to suspect she was seeing someone else.

On Tuesday morning, Rohit accosted and attacked Aarti on her way to work. Witnesses heard him repeatedly say, "Why did you do this to me?" as the Palghar man continued to attack her motionless body.

Chitra Wagh, BJP leader, met with Pournima Chowgule-Shringi, DCP Zone II, to discuss the issue. She claimed that the police assured Aarti that if Rohit bothered her again, they would take serious action, but they were unaware of what happened next.

Wagh was disappointed because none of the bystanders tried to save Aarti. She promised Aarti's mother and sister all possible help and expressed confidence that the state will expedite the case to secure justice.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Umesh Mane of the Tulinj Division said further information would be released as the inquiry progressed. "The police will seek his remand for a detailed probe. We already have the initial information," he stated.
