A 25-year-old State Bank of India employee was shot in his chest by unidentified robbers at the bank’s Dahisar branch on Wednesday evening.

According to police sources, the incident took place at 3:27 pm when the victim, Sandesh Gomane, was working and two accused allegedly entered the bank wearing masks. As Gomane got up from his seat in alert, one of the accused shot him in the chest at point blank range.

The other accused robbed around Rs 2.5 lakh from the cashier's counter and the duo fled towards Dahisar station before anyone could raise an alarm.

Other employees alerted the police and rushed Gomane to Shatabdi Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Based on the statements of the witnesses, the police learnt that the robbers were around 20 to 25 years old. “The robbers committed the crime within two minutes,” said an officer from MHB Colony police station.

Cops said there were around eight employees at the bank at the time of the incident. However, there were no customers present.

The accused targeted this bank as it is located in a non-crowded area and there was less surveillance. The bank security guard was also not present at the time, a police officer said.

“We have registered a case of murder and robbery against two unidentified men. We are scanning through CCTV footage from the surrounding area to identify the robbers,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (North) Pravin Padval.
