Anuj Thapan, an accused who had been arrested in connection with Salman Khan firing case died after allegedly hanging himself at a Mumbai Crime Branch lock-up, official sources said on Wednesday.

Thapan was arrested while his name cropped up during the Mumbai Crime Branch investigations in firing at the residence of Bollywood actor Salman Khan.

He allegedly attempted suicide in the lock-up of Mumbai Police's crime branch on Wednesday and was declared dead at a hospital where he was rushed to, an official said.

Anuj Thapan, 23, hanged himself inside the toilet of the lock-up using a bedsheet. He was rushed to the state-run GT Hospital, where he was declared dead during treatment, the official said, according to the PTI.

An accidental death report will be registered at Azad Maidan police station in south Mumbai.

Thapan was arrested from Punjab along with Sonu Kumar Bishnoi for allegedly supplying weapons to shooters Sagar Pal and Vicky Gupta, who were already arrested, according to police.

Arrested for supplying guns

The Mumbai Crime Branch had arrested two suspects allegedly of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang who had supplied guns to the shooters involved in Salman Khan firing case, the official sources had earlier said.

The suspects were identified as Sonu Subhash Chander (37), a farmer, and Anuj Thapan (31), a truck helper, both residents of Punjab, they had said.

According to police officials, both Chander and Thapan allegedly delivered the pistols to the shooters on March 15 in Panvel area of Navi Mumbai in Maharashtra.

Thapan, one of the accused, had been reportedly working with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang for many years and has a history of criminal records related to extortion and supplying guns, the sources had earlier said.

Both the suspects who had supplied the guns waited at Panvel for 3 hours and even discussed the entire plan with the shooters involved in the Salman Khan firing case, official sources had said.

The Mumbai Crime Branch Unit 9 had arrested them from Punjab and were later brought to Mumbai via a flight. The duo were produced before a Mumbai court which had remanded them in police custody earlier.
