Agency grills Vikhroli cops for hours to find out if Sachin Waze influenced them to file a car theft case

SUV bomb scare case: Local cops under NIA scanner

Some of the officers from Vikhroli police station are under the scanner of the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The agency has grilled the policemen in whose presence Thane-based businessman Mansukh Hiran, who was killed earlier this month, filed a case claiming his Scorpio was stolen. The Vikhroli police had filed an FIR on February 18 based on a complaint from Hiran. Suspended assistant police inspector Sachin Waze had allegedly directed Hiran to file the complaint.

Waze had even influenced the duty officer to take up the case and register a theft case.

Sources in the Mumbai police department told mid-day that NIA officers called a few officers from Vikhroli police station for questioning that went on for hours. “Duty officer on February 18 when the FIR was registered, the investigating officer and others present at the Vikhroli police station that day were questioned by the NIA,” said a source. Confirming the development, an NIA officer told mid-day, “We quizzed them, but have not given them a clean chit yet. If required, they will be called again for questioning or for clarification.”

The NIA, during the initial investigation into the Ambani bomb scare episode and the murder of Hiran, had found that the Scorpio was never stolen. It was parked on the premises of Waze’s society in Thane.

Sources said the city police, too, are conducting a departmental enquiry to find out if any policeman from Vikhroli police station was influenced by Waze. The report of the internal enquiry has to be sub submitted before senior officers at the CP’s office, they added.

Zonal Deputy Commissioner Of Police Prashant Kadam confirmed to mid-day that an internal enquiry is underway.

“They have been directed to cooperate with the NIA officers and to remain transparent in the investigation,” he said.

A Crime Branch officer told mid-day that after being reinstated “Waze had created his image as if he was the equivalent to the commissioner of police. His
every word was followed in the city police as a directive of the commissioner, as no one had the guts to crosscheck with the then commissioner.”

“So, the chances are high that the Vikhroli officers followed Waze’s direction as an order from the then commissioner,” the officer added.
