SUV bomb scare case: Message from ‘terror group’ originated in South Mumbai, says NIA

Dismissed API Sachin Waze

The mystery behind terror organisation Jaish-ul-Hind purportedly taking responsibility for placing a car laden with explosive material near Mukesh Ambani’s residence and later denying the same, has deepened. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) in its probe has found that the content with the organisation’s logo through which the claim was made was created in Mumbai. The document was uploaded on a Telegram channel from Tihar Jail.

Apart from the NIA, the Intelligence Bureau (IB) also conducted a probe into the Jaish-ul-Hind’s role considering the matter was seen as that of national security, especially after the organisation’s name popped up in relation to a minor blast outside Israel embassy in January. The organisation claimed responsibility for that incident.

In the probe of the Antilia threat case and the Mansukh Hiran murder case, the NIA has found links based on which it believes that the content was created somewhere in South Mumbai and sent to the number of an Indian Mujahideen operative who was in Tihar Jail. The jailed operative then shared the content on Telegram.

Were Waze, Sharma involved?

The NIA is probing if dismissed API Sachin Waze and former encounter specialist Pradeep Sharma are behind the Jaish-ul-Hind claim. The NIA also suspects that a convicted criminal and a close aide of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim may have sent the Jaish-ul-Hind content to the mobile being operated out of Tihar Jail on the instructions of someone from Mumbai.

NIA sources said that they will also probe the cyber firm that the Mumbai police had consulted with regard to the report’s manipulation. NIA sources had earlier said that there is manipulation involved in the firm’s report. mid-day had reported on the loopholes present in the report in its March 26 edition. The NIA has reached out to the firm to get some details about the report but a detailed statement is yet to be recorded. “The investigation on the Jaish-ul-Hind part is still underway and we are trying to get clarity from everyone, including some officers in the Mumbai police,” an NIA officer said.

What was the message

The text in the image shared on Telegram took responsibility for placing the Scorpio laden with explosives outside Antilia on February 25 and threatened that the incident was a trailer. However, on the same day, the Mumbai police said on its official WhatsApp group for the press that another letter appearing to be from the same organisation denied any role in the incident.

However, Mumbai police did not specify where the second message appeared. The role of the number being used from Tihar Jail surfaced when the Mumbai police, then headed by Param Bir Singh, claimed that they have tracked it to Tihar Jail with the help of a private cyber firm. The report was also shared with the Delhi police’s special cell which raided Tihar Jail and seized the phone. The cyber firm hired by the Mumbai police has been helping various state police and national intelligence agencies in cyber investigation as per their website.

While seeking a 90-day extension last month to file a charge sheet, the agency had told court that “the demanding money by/of Jaish-ul-Hind is very serious act…this needs deeper probe regarding terrorist involvement”.
