A failed attempt by unidentified thieves to rob an ATM in Thane, Maharashtra, using a gas cutter resulted in a fire, consuming Rs 21 lakh in stored cash, according to police reports on Monday. The event happened early on January 13 at an ATM operated by a nationalised bank in the Dombivali township's Vishnu Nagar neighbourhood, the PTI report stated.

According to the report, between one and two in the morning on January 13, the anonymous offenders broke the shutter lock and forced their way into the ATM kiosk. However, authorities stated that because of the extreme heat produced during the process of using a gas cutter to enter the ATM, they unintentionally started a fire.
