The Vashi police arrested a 26-year-old man for his alleged involvement in three cases of house break-ins. The accused, identified as Ajay Rathod, lived with his family. He lost his job during lockdown and started committing thefts.

On 30 September, 2021, a man named Sachin Kamble filed a complaint in the Vashi police station that his house was robbed in the wee hours while he and his wife were asleep. When they woke up, they found the main door of the flat open and gold ornaments, mobile phones and Rs 1.75 lakh cash was missing. The police registered a case against an unknown person.

A special team was formed by senior inspector Ramesh Chavhan, under the guidance of inspector Pramod Toradmal, led by assistant police inspector Sachin Dhage to solve the case.

The cops checked the CCTV footage and spotted a person who had covered his face. In some of the visuals, the cops noticed a tattoo on his neck. “The tattoo was of a music sign, based on which a search was launched to identify the accused,” said an officer from Vashi police station.

The cops went across Juhu Gaon and zeroed down 12 persons but none of them were involved in the theft. Meanwhile, one of the residents informed the cops that a person with the same tattoo lived in Juhu Gaon but shifted to Kalyan 4 years ago.

The man was tracked down and brought to the police station for interrogation, during which he confessed to the crime.

“After this arrest, we have managed to solve three cases of house break-ins that happened in 2021. The officers are interrogating him to find out if he has committed similar thefts in other parts of the city,” DCP (Zone 1) Vivek Pansare said.

“Apart from this offence, we have recovered valuables worth Rs 2.71 lakh from his possession,” the DCP added.
