Speaking to mid-day, Amir Kale, a practicing lawyer at Bombay High Court, said he and his mother have been frequenting the police station for the past one month to register a case of cheating against their neighbours for renting out their flat to a third party without their knowledge.
Amir and his mother Seema (59), Ghatkopar residents, have been visiting the police station regularly since March 22 to file a complaint in this matter.

“We own a flat in Karishma Apartments at Amrut Nagar, Mumbra. Last year, one of our neighbours requested us to rent her the apartment. Accordingly, an agreement was made and police verification was conducted. Upon the expiry of lease, the neighbour requested us to give her an extension of another six moths. We paid heed to her request and legally extended her lease. However, a month before the lease was about to expire, we discovered that she had rented out the flat to a third party by charging a heavy deposit. When we asked this person to vacate our house, he refused to saying that he had paid the full amount to our neighbour,” said Amir, who assists noted criminal lawyer Amin Solkar, claiming that such cases are on the rise in Mumbra due to an unholy nexus between the local cops and the goons.
Amir said on April 15, he and Seema once again visited the police station and requested the station in-charge to file their complaint, but to no avail. They once again visited the police station on April 17 and 19, but the end result was no different.
“They kept delaying the matter and would call us every alternate day at 9 pm. How can a woman be summoned to a police station after sunset and that too an old lady from Ghatkopar? We again visited the police station on April 20 and requested the officer to register our case. When I sought an explanation for the delay in doing so, Senior Inspector Ravindra Tayade slapped me several times. He pushed my mother so hard that she fainted. Despite telling him that I was a practising lawyer, I was made to sit in the detection room for more than three hours. I was allowed to leave only after one of them checked my ID card,” said Amir.
‘Suspend Tayade’
Kale has now forwarded a written complaint to DCP Sachin Patil and ACP Vikram Patil demanding Tayade’s suspension. Kale also said he would now file an RTI query demanding the CCTV footage of his assault and threatened to file a writ petition in the High Court if appropriate action wasn’t initiated in this matter.
Tainted past
“He [Kale] was wrongly confined inside the police station. If a lawyer is treated with such hostility, one can only imagine the kind of treatment meted out to commoners visiting the police station to lodge a complaint. Higher-ups need to take stringent action against Tayade, who has a tainted past. In the past, he was suspended from Bazarpeth police station for his foolishness. He visited the residence of an abducted 12-year-old boy in uniform. This alerted the kidnapper, who was an insider. Later, the minor was hacked to pieces by his kidnappers. How can such an officer help the society?” said Advocate Raghavendra Mehrotra, who is assisting Kale in this matter.
