In a letter addressed to the man of the hour Anna Hazare, Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray has urged the anti-graft crusader to call off his fast.

The letter was forwarded to Hazare through Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut.

In his letter, Thackeray says, 'Annaji, the war against corruption that you envisioned has reached every corner of the country. Prolonged fasting for eight days has taken a toll on your health, and you should call it off."

Voicing his concern over the deleterious effects that a prolonged fast could have on the health of the 73-year-old veteran, Thackeray emphasised that the nation could not afford to lose an activist of Hazare's mettle, reiterating that the latter should put an end to his fast.

He also put forward the suggestion that the fast be taken forward by Anna's younger aides, especially Kiran Bedi and Arvind Kejriwal.

Thackeray also reminded Hazare of their 1996 rendezvous at the former's Bandra residence, reminiscing how Hazare had enlisted his support in his crusade against corruption, but the plans had never materialised.

Addressing the teeming crowds at Ramlila grounds on Tuesday, Anna had claimed that he would not hesitate to lay down his life at the altar of the nation's progress.

Medha Patkar, who was at Ramlila Maidan, said, "The consensus reached by all of us is that Hazare will continue to fast, and others are free to lend their support, either by sitting with him, or joining his fast."
