Baby girl was found crying under a Parel bus stop submerged in rainwater
While Mithali and Sudhir Kamble were celebrating the birth of a much-loved boy during the solar eclipse yesterday, a newborn girl was found abandoned near a bus stop in Parel.
It is feared that the baby may have been dumped, as she was born during a supposed inauspicious period.
The baby girl was found covered in a raincoat beneath the bus shelter outside Central Railway Workshop on Dr B R Ambedkar Road, partially submerged in rainwater.
Chetan Agarwal, a restaurateur, was on his morning walk around 7.30 am when he saw a crowd around the bus stop.
Agarwal and the others approached the nearby RTO chowky. According to Agarwal, a police officer came to the spot in the Qualis, but did not act.

"We were shocked to see the policemen doing nothing and instead running away from the spot.
After several futile requests to the police to admit the baby to a hospital, we had to take the help of the local corporator," said Agarwal.
Heinous crime
Corporator Nana Ombale informed the cops and the Bhoiwada police reached the spot and took the baby to KEM Hospital where she is currently admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Doctors say the girl's condition is critical and she is on the ventilator.

"The baby is not even a day old; the rain water might have caused damage," said a doctor.
Agarwal fears the incident could be because of the superstitious surrounding eclipses. "Whosoever has done this has committed a heinous crime," he added.

The Bhoiwada police have registered a case under Section 317 of the IPC for abandoning a child below the age of 12 years.
Lost Childhood
Whenever the police find an abandoned baby, they immediately take it to a nearby hospital for a medical check up.
The baby is then admitted to the hospital under the supervision of a lady constable. If after investigations the police are unable to find its parents or relatives, the baby is sent to the Sadanand Ashram, Matunga.
