A 70-year-old woman died and 11 people were injured when a leaking LPG gas cylinder caused an explosion at a Kalyan (West) residence yesterday. The incident took place in a ground plus one room at Dr Ambedkar Nagar, Adharwadi Jail Road, around 6.30 am.

The house belongs to one Ravindra Gaikwad, who stays on the first floor, while he had rented out the ground floor to three tenants.
Speaking to mid-day, Adharwadi Fire Station official Namdev Chaudhary said, &ldquo;At night, the LPG cylinder started leaking in the room rented by Salim Shaikh, but it slowly spread throughout the house. When one of Shaikh&rsquo;s family members switched on the lights in the morning, an explosion took place, which destroyed walls of the adjoining rooms. By the time we could reach, locals had evacuated three people, and we rescued the remaining eight.&rdquo;
Families injured While Shaikh (40), his wife Shabana (35), daughter Arifa (15) and son Rehan (10) were gravely injured as the blast happened in their room, the second tenant Vibhision Awre (50), his wife Aruna (38), and children Dhanshri (18) and Kirti (16) were also hurt. The third tenant, Alka Dhangar (30) was also injured along with her kids Jyostna (16) and Ketan (7), but her mother Tarabai Gaikwad, died when a wall collapsed on her.
Kalyan-Dombivli Muni-cipal Corporation employee and Gaikwad&rsquo;s brother Ranjeet, who lives across the street, told mid-day, &ldquo;I had just returned after a night shift and was chopping vegetables at home when I heard the blast. We immediately started rescuing people from the debris.&rdquo;
Sion Hospital chief medical officer confirmed, &ldquo;Five people were admitted with minor burn injuries. One of them was treated in the OPD.&rdquo;
The remaining injured were admitted to a local hospital in Kalyan.
