A 16-year-old girl from Vasai who went missing three days ago, was found dead in a pond by the Waliv police on Saturday afternoon.

The girl has been identified as Sonam Bhajna Bumbhak, a resident of Devipada Vasai (East). According to the police, the mother woke up at 5 am on Thursday and found the girl was missing. When a desperate search in the vicinity and an inquiry with neighbours yielded no results, she approached the Waliv police station and registered a complaint alleging that her daughter had been kidnapped.

A case of kidnapping was registered under section 363 of the IPC against an unknown person. During the investigation, the police found out that girl had had an argument with her mother on Wednesday night and had stormed out of the house. Apparently, the mother wanted her to take up a job alongside her studies, which the girl refused. “On Saturday, around 1 pm, we received a call from the police control room about the body of a girl found in the Gokhivare pond. She was later identified as Sonam Bumbhak. The autopsy report revealed the cause of death was drowning,” said PRO PSI Ranjeet Shirsaath, adding that it could be a case of suicide.
