A 25-year-old orchestra bar singer has sustained 25 per cent burn injuries to her face after she became a victim of an acid attack in the city in the wee hours of Tuesday, said police.
According to investigating officials, the incident occurred when Jamuna Dera, the victim, a singer at an orchestra bar in Kherwadi was returning home from work.
"Two unidentified men on a motorbike followed Dera's rickshaw to Chembur and threw acid on her face and then fled the spot. We suspect the victim knew her assailants as they followed her right from the bar to the rickshaw in which she was travelling," said a police official.
Police suspect it is a case of love gone wrong where the assailant was unable to handle rejection at the hands of Dera. Dera is currently in Bhabha Hospital receiving medical treatment.
Police officials also added that the driver of the rickshaw she was travelling in also sustained minor burn injuries and he was the one who rushed Dera to the hospital.
Senior Inspector Hemant Patil said the matter is under investigation and any further disclosures would hamper it.u00a0
Cops are waiting for Dera to recover to record her statement. Meanwhile, they are asking her colleagues at the bar and the manager to ascertain if Dera had any enemies or people who held grudges against her.
Acid attack on Kangna's sister
In 2006, Bollywood star Kangna Ranaut's sister became a victim to an acid attack at her residence in Doon valley. Rangoli received burns on her face and body while her friend Vijaya suffered minor injuries.
Rangoli's assailant entered the house on the pretext of giving them a draft and attacked them.
The neighbours on hearing their screams rushed them to government-run Doon hospital from where they were referred to a private medical college.
