After giving the Crime Branch sleepless nights, the missing 'star witness' of the 26/11 terror attacks Anita Uddaiya returned to her Badhwar Park residence at Cuffe Parade as mysteriously as she had gone missing.

The family even filed a complaint at Cuffe Parade police station, claiming that Anita had gone missing since Sunday morning.

However, Anita stumped everyone, including the police, by turning up on Tuesday evening. Joint Commissioner of Police Rakesh Maria ridiculed the idea that Anita had travelled to the US. "It was a figment of her imagination,'' said Maria. "It appears that the woman was paid by someone to go missing," he added.

When contacted, Anita told MiD DAY over the phone that she had gone to visit her relatives in Satara. She said she was fed up with the police and media chasing her and then hung up.

According to a Crime Branch officer, "She is a liar, and was not part of the identification parade. She was neither missing, nor a witness in the case. She has been changing her statements about the number of terrorists, and also cooked up a false story about going to the US."

The crime branch had alerted all exit points across the country to ascertain whether Anita had left the country. They even checked with the US consulate and FBI officials, and found that both theories were false. Maria added that after consulting the courts, Anita may be booked under Section 182 of IPC for the inconvenience caused by her misinformation.

How the whole issue was blown up
On Saturday, Anita had been telling everyone that the police are readying her passport and visa to take her to the US.

According to a crime branch officer, she also took her neighbors to the special branch office, to collect her documents. But the special branch does not look after the passport and visa applications. The next morning she went to the toilet and went 'missing' since then. Her family filed a missing complaint.

However, on Sunday morning, Anita went to meet her husband Rajendra Uddaiya, who is admitted at St George Hospital.

Rajendra told MiD DAY, "Anita said she was supposed to go to the US, along with other witnesses. But, as the passports of the others were not ready, she had to go alone. He added, "She does not listen to me, and has not met me after her return."

After meeting her husband, Anita boarded a milk van from Dadar to Satara on Sunday morning, and returned to Mumbai on Tuesday.
