The incident occurred at 12.20 pm on Saturday, when Somaiya Imran Qureshi, 25, and her son Abu Qureshi, who were headed to Kalyan from Ulhasnagar, tried crossing a railway track at Shahad railway station.
The two tried climbing on to the platform but were unable to do so. At that very moment, a Kurla to Gorakhpur express train, which was running on the same track, was nearing them. Finding them helpless, Rehman Shaikh, 35, a passenger on the platform tried to help them, but fell on the track. All three were run over by the train.
Somaiya was a resident of Ahmednagar and on her way to visit a doctor. Her father owns a mutton shop near Shahad railway station. Shaikh was found to be a resident of Kalwa, near Thane. According to Arun Jagtap, Senior Inspector, Kalyan GRP, "The three died on the spot. We have registered a case of accident."
