Traffic cops say most were found speeding on Saturday and Sunday nights

Intensifying its campaign against bikers speeding at night, the Mumbai Traffic police registered a total of 98 cases from January 23 till February 14. These cases have led to the seizure of 340 bikes and arrest of an equal number of riders.

According to the traffic police, they had identified some places in the city where bikers usually drive rashly at night. At the top of the list is Bandra, from where 183 bikes have been seized and 22 cases registered. According to the police, bikers are usually caught speeding on the Bandra Reclamation and the surrounding areas, and are often found in groups.
After Bandra, a total of six cases have been registered in Mahim and 36 bikes seized. According to the traffic police, most of the bikers in the area were caught while they were going from Mahim Church to the Dharavi T junction.
In Trombay, which is at number three on the list, a total of seven cases have been registered and 31 bikes seized. The cops said that the bikers were caught driving rashly at Mankhurd Highway, Anu Shakti Nagar and Tata Colony.
Fourth on the list is Dindoshi, where the traffic police have registered a total of 16 cases and seized 22 bikes. Police said that the bikers were found speeding on the Western Express Highway (near Film City road and Oberoi Mall).
Last on the list is Malad, where the traffic cops have registered five cases and seized 22 bikes. In this area the bikers were mostly nabbed from the Western Express Highway and near Inorbit Mall.
Requesting anonymity, a traffic cop said, “We launched a special drive to take action against bikers, who drive rashly, on January 22. Most of them are found speeding on Saturday and Sunday nights. They are being booked under section 279 of the IPC.”
Speaking to mid-day, Joint CP (traffic) Yashasvi Yadav said, “Bikers also do stunts while speeding on roads. We are taking action against such bikers as well. We appeal to people to not drive rashly.”
