5.28 crore vehicles on road in Maharashtra, 8.2 pc increase within one year

The number of motor vehicles on road in Maharashtra increased by 40 lakh or 82 per cent in 2025 said the Economic Survey 202526 tabled in the legislative assembly ahead of the state budgetThe total number of motor vehicles stood at 528 crore as of January 1 2026 compared to 488 crore at the beginning of the last yearThere were 41000 vehicles per one lakh population in the state as of January 1There were 378 crore motorcycles scooters and mopeds accounting for the largest share of registered vehicles Light motor vehicles cars jeeps station wagons and taxis numbered 7710 lakhThe state also has 1296 lakh autorickshaws 1593 lakh tractors 520 lakh trailers 201 lakh buses and 26002 ambulances as of January 2026 as per the survey dataThe number of vehicles per kilometre of road length in the state stood at 153 while the vehicle density per lakh population was 41000 the survey saidMaharashtra economy countrys largest outstanding debt stock to be 183 pc of GSDP Economic SurveyMeanwhile Maharashtras economy remains the countrys largest with a nominal Gross State Domestic Product GSDP estimated at Rs 4622 lakh crore in 202425 which is expected to grow to Rs 51 lakh crore as per the Economic Survey 202526 tabled in the assembly on ThursdayAs per the survey which was tabled in the assembly by minister of state for finance Ashish Jaiswal and in the council by MoS Pankaj Bhoyar Maharashtras per capita income at current prices is estimated at Rs 317801 in 202425 which is expected to reach Rs 347903 in 202526 reflecting steady economic growthMaharashtra accounts for the highest share of about 14 per cent in Indias nominal GDP followed by Tamil Nadu 94 per cent and Uttar Pradesh 90 per cent it saidAmong the top ten state economies Tamil Nadu has a nominal GSDP of about Rs 3118 lakh crore followed by Uttar Pradesh Rs 2978 lakh crore Karnataka Rs 2883 lakh crore and Gujarat Rs 2703 lakh crore Other states in the top ten include West Bengal Rs 1815 lakh crore Rajasthan Rs 1704 lakh crore Telangana Rs 1640 lakh crore Andhra Pradesh Rs 1593 lakh crore and Madhya Pradesh Rs 1503 lakh croreIn terms of per capita income states such as Telangana Karnataka Gujarat and Tamil Nadu report higher levels compared with the national average reflecting strong performance in the services and industrial sectors the survey saidMaharashtra continues to maintain its position as the countrys largest state economy driven primarily by strong growth in the services and industrial sectors Maharashtras outstanding debt stock is estimated to be 183 percent of Gross State Domestic Product GSDP in 202526 the survey saidMaharashtras public finances remain stable with the state maintaining its debt and deficit levels within the limits prescribed by the Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management FRBM framework according to the Economic SurveyWith inputs from PTI
