75% cheating maids unregistered

Thefts by house helps are on the rise, especially in areas such as Malabar Hill, Colaba, Oshiwara and Bandra.

An average of five thefts, committed by servants, are registered at the police stations in these localities every month and interestingly 75 per cent of the cases involve servants that are not registered with the cops.

"Residents say that they don't have the time for registration or find it unimportant. We'll now take fingerprints and history details of servants to curb crime rate," said Vishwas Kashyap of the Malabar Hill police station.

Last month, eight cases were registered here. "A fortnight ago, we nabbed a 19-year-old boy, who was employed at a diamond merchant's residence for barely 10 days.

He was attempting to flee with jewellery worth Rs 7 lakh," added Kashyap.

Also, Rs 8.41 lakh worth jewellery from previous robberies was found on the culprit.

Last year, the Malabar Hill police had recovered Rs 30 lakh in booty from various thefts involving maids.

Indrani Malkani, general secretary, Malabar Hill Residents Association, said, "We work in coordination with the police, but don't have records of how many residents get their servants registered. All we can do is give them advice."

Sanjay More, PSI of Oshiwara police station, said most thefts reported, today, are related to house helps. Of the 210 cases registered with the Oshiwara police, this year, 50 per cent involve servants.u00a0u00a0
