8 rushed to hospital in critical condition

TAKING part in the Mumbai Marathon proved costly for eight Mumbaikars who had to be rushed to the hospital in a critical condition.

While seven suffered u00a0from dehydration and u00a0low sugar levels, 53-year-old Shirish Dhande suffered a heart attack after completing the u00a0half marathon a 21-km run.

Dhande, a scientist, was rushed to the Bombay Hospital, where he was admitted in the intensive critical care unit. Dhande's relatives told MiD DAY that this was the first time he was participating in the marathon. "His friends persuaded him," said u00a0a relative at the u00a0hospital.

"The patient is stable and will be kept under observation. The acute attack was because of severe exertion and excitement," said a doctor treating Dhande.

Punit Shroff (40), a Napean Sea Road resident, suffered from severe dehydration and was admitted to the hospital's ICU. "He got acutely dehydrated because his sugar levels had dipped. The patient was brought to the hospital on time and he is stable now," said Dr S Jairam, who is treating Shroff.

Both Dhande and Shroff were administered initial treatment at the health camp at the marathon site, which is manned by medicos from the Asian Heart Institute. Six other runners were also rushed to the Bombay Hospital because of dehydration and u00a0u00a0were put on intravenous fluids.

Dr Vijay D'Silva, medical director, Asian Heart Institute, said, "There were four runners who suffered from severe dehydration and we sent them to the Bombay Hospital after giving initial treatment.

Another runner was vomiting blood. He said he had taken some pain killers in the night, which may u00a0have triggered the vomiting."
