In one of the biggest maritime operations in the country, the Indian Navy and other security agencies conducted a massive search along the 3,000 nautical miles on the western seafront.

The naval operation comes amid reports of a looming terror attack on the city.

The maritime operation got under way on Monday with a fleet of more than 80 warships and ended at 5 pm yesterday.

Indian Navy spokesperson Captain Manohar Nambiar confirmed the operation and said, "The operation was also to ensure that all coastal police stations along the western seafront are operational during the monsoons.''

Naval and Coast Guard ships sailed out to check more than 1,000 ships and fishing trawlers along the estimated 3,000 nautical miles coastline stretching from Kutch to Kerala.

Their task was to track all vessels and check their identities before the rains set in by next week.

The Navy has detained a few suspect vessels, but refused to provide any details due to security reasons. Custom officials were part of the operation.

This is the third coastal security operation after the 26/11 terror attacks in the city. The last operation was conducted by the Coast Guard, Customs and the police in January.

Another major naval exercise code named 'Defence of Gujarat' was conducted between November 17 and 22.

Arms landing

The military intelligence had sounded a major alert on May 24. All police stations along the city's shores have been warned about a major arms landing done on the orders of gangster Dawood Ibrahim's henchmen.

The consignment includes AK-47 rifles, bulletproof jackets, RDX and assorted ammunition.

The report states that local gangsters owing allegiance to Dawood have provided logistical support. The report has also named one Ali as the key mastermind behind the plot.
