A month's search reveals smuggled products worth Rs 15 crore

After going through the contents of 12 shipping containers for over a month, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials discovered that the 40-foot tall containers were carrying products worth Rs 15 crore. They seized the containers on March 4 and different kinds of smuggled goods were found in 10 of them.

The containers had a range of products that were smuggled from Dubai, Bangkok and China.

The containers, shipped from Dubai, Bangkok and China, contained products ranging from LED television, cosmetics to clothes and cigarettes. The DRI has arrested two people from the city in connection with the case.

A senior DRI official said, “The container also had chatton, a semi precious stone, in it. Though we had found these on March 4, going through them took us over a month since there were 12 of them and each was 40 feet long.”

DR has arrested two people in connection with the case and remanded them to judicial custody. The people arrested — Jinesh Vikam and Vijay Patel — are small time traders from Khar. “They operate under Import-Export Code of Momma’s Baby, Baby Face, Vondh Global etc. So far, we have not found names of any big companies in the case,” said a DRI official close to the case.

Another officer said, “They don’t have any criminal record and both have confessed that they have been into concealment for the last two years, mostly in small quantities, but lately they have increased it to this extent.” When mid-day asked if a huge amount of gold too was concealed, Ajit Kumar, Pr. Additional Director General, DRI Mumbai, said, “We have not found any gold. This is a rumor, we did not receive any intelligence pertaining to gold.”
