A topper for life?

As this year's top-ranking HSC students bask in glory, previous toppers reveal the long road ahead

Shipra Biswas, 2001 topper from SIES college with 96.83 per cent, went on to join IIM Ahmedabad and is currently employed in a private firm as a strategic consultant.

"Being a jack of all trades and a master of few is essential in today's corporate world, where one is required to think on the feet. Being bookish and getting good marks can fetch a good college placement but it's not the most defining moment in your life," points out Biswas.

'A stepping stone'
Merit list holder and Nagpur boy Kuntal Majumdar of Shivaji Science Junior College stood second in 2003 with 97.83 per cent.

"Being a topper opens doors of reputed colleges like BITS Pilani and IIM, which have excellent campus placements. But hard work continues, whether one opts for a career or higher education," says Majumdar, who is currently employed by an off-shore oil multinational.

'Higher the better'
Kapil Goenka of RLT Science College in Akola, who scored the highest marks in the state with 98.5 per cent in 2003, is a chartered accountant at Pricewaterhouse Coopers.

"It's disheartening for a student when he or she doesn't get into the college of choice. In my time, anything between 83 and 89 per cent was considered high, but nowadays even securing above 93 per cent doesn't guarantee admission in the college of your choice," he says.

'Hard work pays'
Komal Padia, the overall girl topper of D G Ruparel College who scored 96 per cent in 2003, missed the top spot by a single mark. Padia is doing her Masters in Science from the University of Colorado in Boulder, USA.

"Hard work gives you returns sooner or later. Learning should be the ultimate goal. Pay attention to getting good grades, but not at the expense of understanding the material you are learning," she says, adding, "The desire to succeed, ability to accept failure, positive attitude, hard work and support from near ones. Also, if you didn't get the top score this time, you'll succeed some other time."
