"On the night of April 11, 2009, in an unfortunate incident which took place outside the TISS campus, a student of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, was assaulted. TISS as an institution has always been committed to the wellbeing and safety of its students and strongly condemns this incident. It is taking all necessary steps to ensure that justice is done. The student is being provided all support, including legal assistance and counseling," said a statement issued by the institute.
The police had earlier said that that the accussed were from the institute, a statement that the organisation now denies. Sources within TISS told this paper that while some of the boys were local residents, they were not students.
An American student in her early twenties has registered a case of molestation against her six fellow students from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences.
According to the girl's statement, the six boys and her had had dinner at a restaurant in Chembur on Sunday night and then proceeded to a flat in Andheri where she was molested.
Sources also added that the girl was probably given a drink in the car en route to Andheri which was spiked by the accused.
The main conspirator in the case has been identified as a student named Kundan who along with two others have been arrested by the Trombay police. The other accused students are absconding.
