In a letter that was submitted to the commissioner's office yesterday, advocates Mahesh Vaswani and Shreyas Rao said that Rann's director along with the producers, lyricist, music director and actors Amitabh Bachchan and Riteish Deshmukh were guilty of 'cheap criminal conspiracy for earning money by trampling upon the company's dignity.'
Vaswani said that he was shocked when he came to know of the film's title song Jana Gana Mana Rann. "The entire cast and crew willingly conspired to produce this highly insulting song and therefore, apart from charges under the Prevention of Insults of National Honour Act, we also believe they are guilty of sedition and conspiracy under the IPC," said Vaswani, adding that the police chief had taken cognizance of their complaint.
Sheetal Talwar, co-producer for Rann, was dismissive of the advocates' complaints. "We don't need cheap publicity stunts u2013 we are making the biggest movie of 2009 and as far as cheap gimmicks are concerned, I think that that's exactly what these two advocates are doing by piggybacking on a high-profile production like ours to get into the limelight," said Talwar, adding that the producers had reconsulted their legal team after the controversy erupted.
"We are well within the purview of the law to make this song and we'd like the moral brigade to look up Article 19 of the constitution that guarantees freedom of speech as a fundamental right," said Talwar.
