On July 22, Mumbaikars will witness a partial solar eclipse from approximately 6 am to 7.30 am. While the city will experience a partial eclipse, it is going to be a total solar eclipse for Patna, Bhopal, Indore, Surat, Vadodara, Varanasi, Darjeeling and Gangtok. A total eclipse occurs when the sun is completely obscured by the moon.u00a0
Says Piyush Pandey, director, Nehru Planetarium at Worli, "People can watch this eclipse from their homes or Mumbaikars can come into the planetarium to watch it by 6 am. We have made arrangements like telescopes and solar filters through which people can view the partial eclipse."
Pandey says the eclipse "will bring a small dip in the temperature. It begins at 6.12 am, but as the sun starts brightening, it's better to watch it through a solar safety filter."
As a man of science, Pandey thinks myths and fears associated with this cosmic phenomenon need to disappear in this age of knowledge. "Some are still being perpetuated by astrologers. The government needs to monitor this, as this type of fear mongering undoes scientific work," says Pandey.
