It looks like the implementation of naka bandis across Mumbai to rein in drunk motorists has failed to yield the desired result.

According to traffic police officials, since December 17 they have been penalising just under 100 drunk motorists on an average every day. So far, 1,075 offenders have been penalised in drink driving cases. “We have 90 naka bandi points and around 2,000 traffic police personnel are manning the city streets since December 17,” said Milind Bharambe, joint commissioner of police (Traffic), adding, “We seize their licences and the offenders are produced in the court the next morning.”
Leaves cancelled
Commenting on the police department’s preparation for the New Year’s Eve, Jt CP (Law and Order) Deven Bharti said, “We have cancelled weekly offs and leaves of all the policemen. Nearly 35,000 personnel will be on the city streets on New Year’s Eve to prevent untoward incidents and round up drunk motorists. We have formed around 94 squads that will man the beaches and popular places like Gateway of India and Marine Drive, among others, in plain clothes. We also have a special squad comprising all female officers.”
In the wake of intelligence alert about possible terror attacks, the police have chalked out a compressive plan to safeguard all the entry and exit points of the city.
