Bail for baba
Apart from her, the Bengali baba, Gulam Moin Shattir Hakim Sufi, who is at the centre of the tussle between the high-profile couple was arrested by Khar police on April 5 and kept under judicial custody. Sufi, who had also filed for bail, was granted the same yesterday.
The socialite applied for bail after her husband, industrialist Jaidev Shroff who heads the R2,000-crore United Phosphorous Limited, filed an FIR against her at Khar Police station, accusing her of spiking his drink with a mysterious powder on the advice of Sufi. The said drink had then left him drowsy and disoriented, he said. Poonam was summoned twice by the cops. She was barred from entering her estranged husband’s Bandra home by the family court, where the couple’s divorce proceedings are on.
Her lawyers Amit Desai and Pranav Badheka had argued before the court, asking what is it that the police want to know, that cannot be known without taking her into custody. “Does the police want her custody to take a voice sample? Then, for that, custody is not required.”
Poonam was booked under section 328 (Causing hurt by means of poison, etc.), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
