Today is the second day to buy application forms for 3,863 MHADA houses. Even as 88,222 forms were sold yesterday to as many hopefuls, spread across low income, middle income and high income groups, at the 22 HDFC bank outlets in the city, it doesn't guarantee a flat. Ask Mohan Rane from Parel.
Since the last 20 years, I have been staying in a rented flat in Parel, paying Rs 5,000 every month. I had queued up yesterday at the Parel HDFC Bank outlet, but by the time I got to the window at 2.30 pm, it had shut. I have been standing in this queue since 3.30 am today," grumbled Rane who stays with his wife and two children.
Rane's children, both employed at the hospital, are asleep at home, blissfully unaware of his stress. "Naturally, I have to worry about the house. I am totally shattered by my past experiences. I hope I get a flat this time at least."
Others like Sushila Haji, a housewife and one of the few women in the queue, also missed getting the form yesterday. "I have being waiting since 11 pm. I was here yesterday, but joined late, so I reached the window after 2.30 pm. Today I want to be the first to get the form," she said.
Given the humongous numbers in the queues all over the city, applicants have begun something that is in effect, uniquely Mumbai. "We have begun maintaining a log sheet that records names of people in the queue, so no one can jump the queue," said Tukaram Bhangre, who has been in the queue since 4 am.
Forms will be given out till January 30 and the last date for submission of the forms is January 31.
