There was no safety net at the spot where he fell. The Bangur Nagar police have arrested the contractor Yunus Shaikh (41) and the supervisor of the construction site Aftab Sayyed (48) on the charge of causing death due to negligence.
The accident took place at 8.30 am yesterday. Patel who had been working with the contractor for the past eight years was dismantling the iron column plates on the eighth floor. His co-worker Ram Kishor saw him fall and called out for help but it was too late. Patel succumbed to his injuries on the spot.
A security guard present at the spot said, "The safety net at the spot where Patel fell had got torn off a few days back due to constant offloading of raw materials for construction at the floors above. However, the management did not replace it."
Assistant Police Inspector Anant Dange of Bangur Nagar police station said, "The supervisor and the contractor have been found guilty for not ensuring complete safety of workers at the site. Patel lost his balance and fell down on rugged ground after the iron plate holding his safety belt's hook got dislodged."
He added, "The entire site has safety nets, but the spot where Patel fell had none. Had there been a safety net, he would have survived with injuries," added Dange.
Patel who hailed from Gorakhpur in UP is survived by a wife and three children. He had worked at the site for a few months till the completion of the 20-storey building.
