Cheque-bouncing cases up in 2008

THERE has been a steep rise in the number of cheque-bouncing cases filed after July 2008 in the Metropolitan Magistrate courts of the city. According to statistics obtained from the magistrate courts, 7,994 cases were registered in June 2008 under Section 138 of Negotiable Instrument Act. By July 2008, the cases went up to 12,908 and in August, to 21,603. December figures are down to 10,116. A total of 74,532 cases were registered in the last half of 2008, whereas the number for the entire year of 2007 was 58,752. According to court sources, the High Court has already decided to set up 20 more courts to deal with these cases. The HC has asked the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate to give details about the infrastructure needed to set up these courts.
