Says the widow of the gangster's aide; Balu Dokre's killer was nabbed recently
When Deepali's husband Balu Dokre, a Chhota Rajan gangster, was killed, she wanted only two things the reason behind the murder and some help from the gang he had given his life for.
In the four years since the murder, neither Chhota Rajan nor his associates provided any support to Dokre's family. But Deepali now takes solace in the fact that she has at least found the answers to her questions.
Rashid Malbari, a key shooter of the Dawood Ibrahim gang who was arrested last month from near Mangalore, confessed to Karnataka's Department of Criminal Intelligence Bureau that he had killed Balu on Chhota Shakeel's orders.
This revelation also cleared the speculation that Chhota Rajan was behind Dokre's murder.
"It has been over four years since Balu was bumped off. I always wanted to know the reason behind the murder," Deepali told MiD DAY from the one-room flat in the city, where she stays with her two children.u00a0
Deepali acknowledged that she was bitter about Chhota Rajan's inaction, but added, "I do not want to say much on this issue, as it will unnecessarily endanger my children's lives."
Deepali, who is estranged from Balu's family, now runs a beauty parlour.
Meanwhile, the police expect the Malaysian police to seek Malbari's extradition, as Balu was killed in Kuala Lumpur.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Deven Bharati said, "Malaysia will have to follow diplomatic channels to extradite Malbari. He has over six cases against him in Mumbai."
Who is Balu Dokre?
A school dropout, Balu Dokre took to crime after the death of his father Keshav, a mill worker in 1988. The urge to make easy money compelled Balu to leave his job at a reputed shop in Santacruz, where he was paid a salary of Rs 1,500.
He joined Rama Pawar's gang in 1988 and was soon charged with serious offences such as attempt to murder, extortion and murder. He later worked with the Chhota Rajan gang for over a decade ago and had 43 cases of murder and extortion registered against him.
Who is Malbari?
Rashid Malbari became associated with the upper echelons of Mumbai's underworld in September 2000, when he opened fire on rival gangster Chhota Rajan in Bangkok, injuring him seriously. Malbari became active in Mumbai after Raja Gore, a frontline Chhota Rajan shooter, killed Malbari's elder brother Ismail outside the Vikhroli Court in 2007. Shortly after, Malbari fled the country and began operating from Karachi and Bangkok.
