Clean sweep in Mumbai increases responsibility: Priya Dutt

Mumbai North Central MP Priya Dutt on Sunday said that clean sweep for Congress in the city has increased her party's "responsibility and commitment" towards the metropolis.

The Congress party made a clean sweep in the financial capital, bagging all the six seats. "The challenge has just begun. One election has concluded and another one will soon follow," Priya, who won by a margin of nearly 1.74 lakh votes, said, referring to the assembly elections scheduled later this year.

Chalking out her immediate priorities, Priya said she will soon meet the party workers from the constituency to discuss co-ordination with the civic authorities about monsoon preparedness since the worst affected areas of the 2006 deluge fall in her segment.

Regularisation of slums upto year 2000, re-development of slums, rehabilitation of the poor, expediting the Mithi river cleaning and development, pushing for more funds for improving basic amenities and infrastructure in the city, would be taken up on the urgent basis, she said.

Priya said all the six MPs need to unitedly take up the cause of Mumbai with the central government. The daughter of late actor Sunil Dutt was felicitated by city congress chief Kripashankar Singh on her record win.

Singh, who is also a local MLA, said he would soon call a meeting to deliberate on preparations for the assembly polls.

"We need to start preparations to win all the 36 assembly seats in the city. Especially in Mumbai North Central, we have to win all the six assembly segments as has been the tradition since the time of late Sunil Dutt," he said.

Singh said all the six MPs should focus on bringing more central funds to Mumbai and we have to ensure that the money which has already come is utilised fruitfully and all the ongoing projects are expedited.

"We will not fail the people of Mumbai who have put tremendous faith in us," he said.
