Louis Salvi alias Raju (40), who ran a telephone bill of Rs 1.45 lakh on sex calls while working as a peon at a beggar's home in Chembur in 2005, died of tuberculosis on Friday in Ahmednagar.

Gautam Arwel, superintendent, Receiving Centre for Beggars, said, "An inquiry committee had ordered a deduction of Rs 3,000 from his salary of Rs 6,000 for 42 months towards the recovery of the amount.

After his demise, the amount due from Louis will be recovered from his pension."

Louis, however, had told his colleagues that there were other employees who also made sex calls, but he was the only person punished.

Rahul More, district women and child development officer supervising the centre, said, "The government has submitted a prescribed format of recording outgoing calls made from office to ensure there is no misuse."

Louis had also taken a personal loan with a surety from the department and Rs 2,200 was deducted every month from his salary towards the recovery of that amount.

How he was caught

The Maharashtra State Commission for Safai Karmacharis probed the beggar home's gigantic phone bill and found Louis guilty of misusing the telephone.

MTNL records revealed that the calls were made to ten-digit phone numbers starting with 0900 (sex chat lines).

Ashok Garud, senior caretaker of the beggar home, said Louis had the keys of the office, including the cabin from where the calls were made.
